Advanced Telescope for High Energy Nuclear Astrophysics Athena

چکیده
We present a space mission concept for a low energy gamma-ray telescope, ATHENA, which is under investigation as the next major advance in gamma-ray spectroscopy following the current COMPTON Gamma Ray Observatory and the planned INTEGRAL missions. The instrument c o v ers the nuclear line emission energy domain with dramatically improved sensitivity and spectral resolution. The baseline connguration combines a high resolution Compton telescope constructed from Ge planar strip detectors for the 0:3 , 10 MeV energy region with a coded-aperture system for the 10 , 200 keV domain. The Ge Compton telescope provides a broad eld of view with exceptional spectral and imaging resolution. The requirements, capabilities and simulations of ATHENA are discussed.

Position Sensitive Germanium Detectors for the Advanced Compton Telescope
The nuclear line region of the gamma ray spectrum remains one of the most challenging and elusive goals of high energy astrophysics. The scientific objectives are well defined, but require well over a factor of 10 increase in sensitivity compared to present day instruments to be achieved. The most promising approach to achieve this sensitivity and a broad range of scientific objectives is offer...
متن کاملSUPERNOVAE AS THE SITE OF THE r-PROCESS: IMPLICATIONS FOR GAMMA-RAY ASTRONOMY
We discuss how detection of gamma-ray emission from the decay of r-process nuclei can improve our understanding of r-process nucleosynthesis. We Ðnd that a gamma-ray detector with a sensitivity of D10~7c cm~2 s~1 at keV may detect the emission from the decay of 125Sb, 137Cs, 144Ce, Ec B 100È700 155Eu, and 194Os produced in a future Galactic supernova. In addition, such a detector may determine ...

We discuss how detection of gamma-ray emission from the decay of r-process nuclei can improve our understanding of r-process nucleosynthesis. We find that a gamma-ray detector with a sensitivity of ∼ 10 −7 γ cm −2 s −1 at E γ ≈ 100–700 keV may detect the emission from the decay of 194 Os produced in a future Galactic supernova. In addition, such a detector may detect the emission from the decay...
متن کاملThe Energy Resolution of The MAGIC Telescope
In the field of gamma-rays Astrophysics in the – energy domain, the understanding of spectra of detected gamma rays is necessary in developing models for acceleration, emission, absorption and propagation of very high energy particles in their sources and in space. Therefore, high precision in the measurement of the energy of observed gammas is important. On the example of the 17 ø MAGIC telesc...
متن کاملMAX: Development of a Laue diffraction lens for nuclear astrophysics
The next generation of instrumentation for nuclear astrophysics will have to achieve an improvement in sensitivity by a factor of 10-100 over present technologies. With the focusing gammaray telescope MAX we take up this challenge and propose to combine the required sensitivity with high spectral and angular resolution, and the capability to measure the polarization of the photons. MAX is a spa...
